In reality, the biggest predictor of output quality isn’t the AI at all. It’s the prompt. Small wording changes can swing results from unusable to excellent, which tells us something important: AI systems aren’t mind readers. They respond exactly to what you give them—just not in the way most people expect.
A large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT doesn’t “understand” your request the way a colleague does. It predicts the most likely next words based on patterns from massive amounts of text. Think of it less like an employee and more like an incredibly fast autocomplete engine with a good memory for how instructions usually look.
When you write a prompt, the AI scans for three things, in this order:

Weak prompt:

Stronger prompt:

Same document. Same AI. Completely different usefulness.
Context tells the AI which patterns to prioritize. “Senior leadership” activates different language than “new hires” or “customers.” Without that cue, the AI defaults to a generic middle ground.
Analogy: Giving AI no context is like asking a designer to “make a slide” without saying who it’s for or why. You’ll get something, but probably not what you need.
